Mugabe offers up farms to pay off his political debts

Article Abstract:

Zimbabwean President Robert Mugabe has listed 1,500 units of commercial farm land for compulsory seizure. Most of this land is farmed by rich white farmers. Mugabe hopes in this way to secure his political future, avoiding being removed from power by 50,000 war veterans who are seeking a one-off combat reward payment of 50,000 Zimbabwe dollars and a pension of 2,000 Zimbabwe dollars a month. A national strike was staged recently in protest against new taxes to fund payments to war veterans.

Fun-loving man who was 'driven to write.' (Sir Kingsley Amis)

Article Abstract:

Novelist Sir Kingsley Amis, who died recently, had very strong opinions, many of which were extremely right-wing. However, he was widely admired for his literary achievements. He first came to public attention as one of the 'Angry Young Men' of the 1950s with his first novel, 'Lucky Jim,' but his views became progressively more right-wing as he grew older. He developed very fixed habits, and died a rather lonely man.
