A series of performances being staged in London, England, aims to unite music from the European classical tradition with traditional music from other cultures. The events making up this programme will include 'Roots: Classic Fusions,' in which the London Philharmonic will perform under Kent Nagana with a range of Asian and African musicians, and 'Music and the Marvellous,' which will look at the influences of non-Western sounds. A series of concerts investigating the response of 20th century Western composers to non-Western sources is to be held in Glasgow, Scotland.

Article Abstract:

The music of Igor Stravinsky bears clear traces of pre-existent sources and procedures, and contains many stylistic cribs and allusions. However, he also had a desire to shed his musical heritage. He did not fully realize himself until the danced cantata 'The Wedding,' the fourth of his great Russian ballets. This was essentially his own concept, with a scenario and text taken from old Russian wedding customs. In contrast, the scenario and dance sequence for 'The Firebird' were already worked out before Stravinsky began working on it.
