Music: a plan for survival

Article Abstract:

Some observers feel that fewer and fewer people will attend live musical performances in the future, preferring to avoid travelling and listen to music in the comfort of their own home. They feel that this trend will be accelerated by the arrival of digital broadcasting, which will allow classical music and opera to be broadcast with very high sound quality. However, this view is too negative, and fails to take account of the fact that digital broadcasting could actually increase interest in classical music.

A trauma that must be shared by us all

Article Abstract:

Memories of the Holocaust have always been very difficult to deal with, and the 50th anniversary of the liberation of the Nazi death camps has been mainly marked in private and personal ways, rather than on a national level. The survivors feel that they are not the true witnesses of the horrors of the Holocaust, as the witnesses are those who were killed. Memories have mainly come from the perpetrators themselves, as those who saw the inside of the gas chambers never survived to tell their story.

Survival was just the start of the trauma

Article Abstract:

Many of the people who survived the sinking of the 'Marchioness' pleasure boat on the Thames in 1989 are still suffering severe emotional and physical problems. They have received counselling, but still experience feelings of guilt that they survived when many friends drowned. Some are also having physical difficulties, such as headaches.
