Muslims learn to fear Tudjman's embrace

Article Abstract:

One of the most striking aspects of the highly sensitive talks which led to the Bosnian peace agreement was the attitude of Croatian president Franjo Tudjman. He made no efforts to disguise his contempt for the Muslims, and did not really treat president Alija Izetbegovic of Bosnia as an equal. The end of a false consensus

Article Abstract:

The false consensus which existed between Europe, the US and Russia until recently over military involvement in the Bosnian war prevented the United Nations from taking positive action, either to become more involved or to withdraw. The US was unwilling to offend Russia, while France and the UK were unwilling to offend the US. Now, military action will only be successful if France and the UK can convince the US that it must become more involved.

Hunkering down for a long, long war

Article Abstract:

The conflict in former Yugloslavia now looks set to become a long-term war, with many ceasefires having already broken down. International diplomacy seems to have failed, and the United Nations has been forced to acknowledge that there will be no easy solution to the conflict. It is becoming clear that wars of grievance, based on racial or religious hatred, have a capacity to drag on for many years.
