My romance with the monster of the jet age

Article Abstract:

Heathrow airport, England, has grown to become a city with over 50,000 employees and 60 million transient inhabitants annually. There have been memorable moments when celebrities have appeared at the airport. There are rehearsals for fires, but minor events can cause serious problems such as an explosion in a switchboard which led to aircraft being delayed while power was cut for four hours. The airport is a symbol of achievement, yet violence and hatred can wipe out its achievements, as occurred in the Lockerbie bombing.

Dealing with disaster

Article Abstract:

Former futures trader Nick Leeson used a secret error account to hide the very large losses he made on the Japanese Nikkei futures market while working for Barings Bank in Singapore. Towards the end of the time when he was involved in this fraud, he was obtaining almost without question extremely large sums of money in cash transfers from his office in London, England. He managed to make 869 million pounds sterling vanish, and it is still not known what happened to this money, none of which he used himself.

Liverpool stops at 3.06pm, and looks back in sad anger on the day 96 died

Article Abstract:

The city of Liverpool, England, fell silent at 3.06pm on Apr 15, 1999, to mark the 10th anniversary of the death of 96 football fans at the Hillsborough stadium in Sheffield, England. Some observers believe that the 10th anniversary should be used as an opportunity to make a fresh start and to move on from this tragedy. However, the families of those who died are still seeking satisfactory explanations, and continue to fight for justice for those who were killed.
