Mysterious force for jobless rattles Jospin's coalition

Article Abstract:

French Prime Minister Lionel Jospin is facing a very strong challenge from the growing protest movement for the long-term unemployed. The strength of support for this movement has already forced the government to make concessions, and Jospin is now likely to make a commitment to raise minimum social benefits in spring 1999. The movement is mainly calling on the government to bring the long-term unemployed within the system, ensuring that they have a permanent political status and that they can live in a tolerable fashion.

Asia will have 12 of the 15 largest cities in the world by 2015, and none will be in Europe. Some cities, especially in Africa, have developed in a totally uncontrolled way, while the prospects for others, such as Bombay, look more positive.
