Mystery death of an eco-warrior

Article Abstract:

Social worker Sanjoy Ghose had a significant impact on the lives of the residents of Majuli, a 30 km-long island situated in the middle of the Brahmaputra River in the Indian state of Assam. He and six friends began an experimental programme to prevent the erosion of the island, thus highlighting the fact that money made available by the authorities for development work there had been stolen by politicians and contractors. The United Liberation Front of Asom denounced Ghose as an agent for military intelligence, and he was abducted on Jul 4, 1997. His body has never been found, and local people contacted by his widow have been intimidated.

When the fir traders spruce up their act

Article Abstract:

People wishing to purchase a Christmas tree now have a very wide range of choose from. Traditionally, Christmas trees have always been Norwegian spruce, but varieties such as Douglas fir, Scots pine and Colorado fir are now also available. It is possible to purchase a tree with no roots at all, one with exposed roots or one in a pot. There are also systems available which reduce problems with needles dropping. The market is becoming increasingly competitive, and people who purchase very close to Christmas can obtain a tree very cheaply.

Invasion of the horse traders

Article Abstract:

There has been considerable controversy in the town of Stow-on-the-Wold, England, over recent years regarding a fair which has been held twice a year since the 14th century. Many local people feel that this event has simply become a target for gypsies, who come to the town in large numbers at fair times. Gypsies regard fairs as an integral part of their culture, and resent efforts to have them banned or moved to new locations.
