Mystery of wartime friendship may never be unravelled

Article Abstract:

Russian Jew Anatoly Shandalov feels that he has constantly lived with the consequences of his meeting in May 1945 in Lvov, Ukraine, with Frederick Grace and James Logie, British sergeants from the military mission in the town. He was interested in English literature and spoke to the sergeants out of a desire to improve his English. This meeting was to have serious consequences, as he was arrested by the security police in 1950, tortured and imprisoned until 1956. He was never able to make contact with the two sergeants again.

Ethiopians sent into an Israeli minefield

Article Abstract:

Falash Mura, Ethiopian Christians who claim that they were once Jews and plan to reconvert, have travelled to Israel from Addis Ababa, Ethiopia. They have been sent by the Israeli government to Ofra, a settlement of religious Jews constructed on land captured by Israel in 1967. They would prefer to be in Haifa, Israeli, or Tel Aviv, Israel, where they have relatives and employment is easier to find. Ofra and three other settlements in the occupied territories are taking the Ethiopians in return for a government subsidy.
