NCPA hears from agencies, Congress

Article Abstract:

Officials from the FDA and the Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) spoke at the National Community Pharmacists Assn's National Legislation and Public Affairs 31st Annual Conference in Washington, DC, on Feb 7-9, 1999. FDA deputy commissioner Michael Friedman allayed the pharmacists' fears on the agency's Medication Guideline program, saying that only four or five drugs per year will be considered as having serious health risks. Meanwhile, DEA Liaison and Policy chief Patricia Good admitted that the agency had mishandled minor violations of the Controlled Substances Act.

Collective bargaining bill gains support

Article Abstract:

Representative Tom Campbell has proposed the Quality Health Care Coalition Act of 1999 which would allow healthcare professionals to negotiate third-party contracts. Campbell believes that the bill would let the healthcare market deal with complaints about health maintenance organizations. The bill also enjoys bipartisan support unlike a similar bill proposed by Campbell in 1998.
