Nafta dream turns sour

Article Abstract:

President Bill Clinton managed to Congress to approve the North American Free Trade Agreement (Nafta) by promising that it would create new markets for many US companies in Mexico. However, the devaluation of the Mexican peso has meant that Mexico can no longer afford goods from the US, and Nafta is now coming under scrutiny once more. Its opponents are welcoming the opportunity to criticise it again, especially in the light of controversy over the plan for a bail-out package of $40 billion in loan guarantees to Mexico.

Unity among Allies masks trouble ahead

Article Abstract:

There are mixed views among western nations about the best way to deal with Iraqi aggression against Kurds in the north of the country. The UK and France were rather reluctant to agree to US missile attacks on Iraq, but saw that a firm response had to be made. It is uncertain what further action will now be taken by the allies. Much will depend upon how Saddam Hussein reacts, and this is extremely hard to predict.
