Strike force finds tactics for survival in a changing world

Article Abstract:

The Royal Marines, founded in 1664, are the amphibious infantry of the Royal Navy. Their duties include manning bombardment craft, sniping from men-of-war and commando action on land. There is a fighting strength of 7,000 men. The Marine Commando Training Centre, Lympstone, Devon provides rigorous training for recruits, non-commissioned officers and high-ranking officers together. The aim is to get everyone through the 30 weeks basic training, which 65% pass. Mental stamina is important.

Serbs humiliate UN in 'safe area.' (Bosnian Serbs force their way into Muslim 'safe area' of Srebrenica)

Article Abstract:

Thousands of Muslim refugees have been forced to leave the Muslim 'safe area' of Srebrenica following the rapid withdrawal of Dutch United Nations peace-keepers in the face of a strong attack from Bosnian Serb forces. The Bosnian Serbs were not deterred by two Nato air attacks, and are now reported to be close to taking the nearby 'safe area' of Zepa. The United Nations had committed itself to defending Srebrenica, so the withdrawal of its forces is a considerable embarrassment.

Kremlin scraps massive army for elite force

Article Abstract:

A rapid-reaction force based on the Airborne Forces, which cover 50,000 troops, is set to form the nucleus of a radically restructured Russian army. This comes at a time when efforts are already being made to reinstate military traditions used in the early years of the 20th century and to boost the image of the armed forces. Attention will be focused on the elite airborne forces, seen as the only troops which are able to meet the demands of modern warfare.
