New Shanghai swings to the old rhythms

Article Abstract:

There are many signs that Shanghai, China, is undergoing cultural and economic revival. The 45 million pounds sterling Shanghai Museum opened in autumn 1996, for example, and this was followed in Dec 1996 by the new Shanghai library. The city has a very thriving nightlife, and has attracted extensive foreign investment. However, it is still a city of contradictions. The gap between rich and poor is growing rapidly, and unemployment among the population of 14 million is extremely high.
