New muscle wasting disease identified

Article Abstract:

Evidence of a newly discovered muscle wasting disease is reported in the current issue of The Lancet. The condition is called macrophagic myofasciitis, and is suspected to be caused by a bacterium or virus similar to the type responsible for tuberculosis and leprosy. Patients' muscle tissue shows evidence of damage by immune system cells, called macrophages, which appear to congregate around connective tissue sheaths which bundle muscles together. The disease causes joint pains, weakness, fatigue and fever and has so far affected 18 patients in France.
