Nike trips up over poverty pay for Asian labour force

Article Abstract:

There have been protests over conditions in factories producing Nike shoes in Asia. The Hong Kong Christian Industrial Committee has issued a report which has been used as a source by a US women's coalition, including the National Organization of Women, which is protesting against the conditions. The report argues that multi-nationals are ultimately responsible for wages and conditions, since they put pressure on subcontractors who in turn put pressure on workers. Nike argues that it pays more than other plants owned by Asian companies.

According to the ICFTU, Pakpahan has been conducting normal duties in keeping with his position. The United Nations Commission on Human Rights, which believes that the law infringes human rights, has wanted the Act repealed since 1993.
