Take the money - and confess

Article Abstract:

The UK Labour Party tabled a motion for banning foreign governments from making donations to political parties, but such a law would be easy to evade. Insisting on disclosure might be more effective. At present, Conservatives may contribute unknowingly to Labour Party funds through their trade union and Labour voters may contribute unknowingly to the Conservatives because their pension funds are invested in companies who contribute to the Central Office.

Brands must flow in water deal

Article Abstract:

Sir Leon Brittan, European Commission competition officer, investigated a deal for Nestle to buy the bottler Source Perrier SA from Perrier which would have made Nestle and BSN the only two bottled water firms in France. The sale was permitted on condition that Nestle sell about eight of the water sources it will acquire to a single buyer. Under 2% of mineral water sales are imports, restricting the market in France.
