No mercy for young maid who begged to go home

Article Abstract:

Sri Lankan maid Sithy Farook was executed in Apr 1995 in the United Arab Emirates after standing trial on charges of murdering the four-year-old daugher of her employer in Oct 1994. She was sent to work in the United Arab Emirates in order to earn enough money to buy her parents a new home in Sri Lanka, but found that the work was extremely hard. She had to look after many children, and was treated harshly. She admitted to the murder, but only because the child's father had promised her that she would be sent home if she did.

Between faith and fanaticism

Article Abstract:

Islam is often portrayed very negatively in the western world, with considerable emphasis on brutal punishments and the harsh treatment of women. Indeed, Muslims themselves are often critical of the way in which their religion is practised. However, this view overlooks the failings of western society, where there is not the strong faith in God that the Muslims have. In the west, women are oppressed too, and latest technological developments are kept from the rest of the world.

Hopes fade for Middle East peace

Article Abstract:

President Bill Clinton has probably lost the opportunity to bring about a peace settlement in the Middle East. He has failed to react to the Israeli threat to annex the Israeli-occupied West Bank, and has not drawn up a strategy against the refusal by Saddam Hussein to cooperate with United Nations inspectors. It now seems likely that Israel will reconquer the West Bank and Gaza Strip, while the international community will merely ignore Saddam Hussein's aggressive stance.
