Article Abstract:

Manchester City Art Galleries is currently holding an exhibition of the paintings and prints of David Hockney from the period 1982-1995. This is based around 'Montcalm Interior at Seven o'clock,' a lonely and melancholic work painted in 1988. These works do not show the vigour and wit of Hockney's earliest creations, and seem to indicate that he has become burdened by the weight of what has gone before. He now focuses on space, and has taken his interest in complex theories of perspective to extremes.

Pablo: the biopic?

Article Abstract:

The Grand Palais in Paris, France, is currently holding an exhibition entitled 'Picasso and Portraiture.' This is presented in a manner which encourages visitors to see Picasso's painting in diaristic and anecdotal terms. Taking such a literal approach to the artist's work is misguided, as the work should not merely be valued for what it can convey about Picasso's life. Many of the works on display are not portraits at all, and serve merely to perpetuate a modern misconception of Picasso's painting.

In search of the edible woman

Article Abstract:

The retrospective of the work of abstract expressionist painter Willem de Kooning currently being shown at the Tate Gallery, London, elevates him to such a high status that visitors can easily be misled. He is certainly a fascinating artist, but it cannot really be claimed, as the exhibition catalogue tries to, that he has major cultural significance. The exaggerated language being used to describe his influence makes him into a pretentious painter, which he certainly was not.
