No place like home in tomorrow's world

Article Abstract:

A report produced by the Henley Centre called The Next Generation: Lifestyles for the Future, is indicating the importance of the home in the future of the workplace. It has been predicted that in 20 years time that 20% of people will be self employed and that less than 50% of people will work full time. The home is set to become very important as a place of work by the year 2020. Women are expected to adapt better to the changing work environment, and by the year 2020 they will become a premium in the workforce, as they are better suited to flexible employment and have strong skills in areas such as time management and teamwork. Another premium in the workforce will be the 'Millennial Kids' or those born after 1978, who will have accepted the need for self sufficiency and future planning better than other groups.

Retailers' warnings fail to curb rent rises

Article Abstract:

Retail rents in the UK are continuing to rise to uneconomic levels resulting in polarisation in the high street and in UK towns between prime locations and less desirable sites, even though over the next three years, rent income will drop from its current level of 6.2%. According to a report out on 15 June 1998 from UK chartered surveyors, Donaldsons, demand for available and limited store space in prime shopping location such as London's West End is continuing to drive up rents, even though consumer demand is starting to be affected by higher interest rates. Regional areas in the UK experiencing a high retail growth include Manchester, Edinburgh and Bolton, while 10 areas including Southport and Stockport in the Northwest and Falkirk in Scotland have all improved following below average performances in 1994.
