No time to despair - where there's talk there's hope

Article Abstract:

It would appear on the surface that the prospects for a peace settlement in Northern Ireland are not very good. However, deeper investigation indicates that peace in Northern Ireland may not be a lost cause after all. UK Prime Minister Tony Blair and Irish Prime Minister Bertie Ahern still have great respect for each other, even if the positions of their respective governments remain far apart, and the republican bomb recently discovered by the Gardai was almost certainly not the work of the mainstream IRA. One of the main obstacles to a peace agreement may now be the lack of belief in success.

How long can Blair wait for Sinn Fein?

Article Abstract:

It is very easy to doubt the commitment of Sinn Fein to the peace process in Northern Ireland following the fatal shooting by the IRA of two RUC men. Questions must now be raised about whether the UK government should make any further attempts to bring Sinn Fein into the peace talks. UK Prime Minister Tony Blair and Northern Ireland Secretary Mo Mowlam are very keen to bring about a ceasefire, but if they cannot do this then they will still proceed with talks between the existing constitutional parties.
