Northern exposure

Article Abstract:

The Northlands Festival in Caithness, Scotland, places strong emphasis on the distinct cultural identity of this part of Scotland. Key events include a performance of Schoenberg's 'Song of the Wood Dove' with the BBC Scottish Symphony Orchestra's new soloists' ensemble. The festival will also feature the world premiere of 'Sounds from the Snow and the Flow,' with Greenland Inuit Kasulak Qavigak, Sami singer Mari Boine and Sheena Wellington. The finale of the festival will be the second and last performance of the community opera 'Tales from the End of Northworld.'

Four guys named Hilliard ...

Article Abstract:

The Hilliard Ensemble has linked with saxophonist Jan Garbarek in the 'Officium' project, which is soon to start a tour of the UK. Some observers have expressed concern about the bringing together of sacred early music and the saxophone, which they see as a very secular, 20th century instrument. The resulting music is indeed sexual in nature, with an unusual mixture of musical temperatures and textures. However, it has proved extremely popular, and 400, 000 albums have been sold so far worldwide.

Cassandra complex

Article Abstract:

Jazz singer Cassandra Wilson remains something of an enigma, and this may have assisted her in becoming highly popular. Her Blue Note albums, 'Blue Light Til Dawn' and 'New Moon Daughter,' are of very high quality, and she can sometimes give excellent live performances. She sometimes sings without words, but avoids the jazz practice of scat-singing, preferring to regard her voice as an instrument.
