Help from the heavens

Article Abstract:

The Helicopter Emergency Medical Services (Hems), based at the Royal London Hospital, was set up in 1989 in response to research which showed that immediate diagnosis and appropriate treatment after an accident can vastly improve the patient's chance of survival and cut down the risk of later complications. The helicopter is able to bring hospital facilities right to the scene of an accident, and can save hospital costs in the long term by providing treatment which speeds up the patient's recovery. However, its critics object to the cost of running the service, with many of its missions being wasted.

It is now becoming increasingly common for people to consult a fortune-teller, according to a 1993 Gallop survey. Many people believe that it is possible to predict that something will happen before it actually does, and one in five people believe in lucky mascots. This revival in interest in the supernatural can be seen in many forms, and includes New Age books and magazines dedicated to the subject. People are no longer ashamed to admit to being supersitious, and many believe that there are ways in which they can influence their luck.

Granada's new motorway service station between junctions 11 and 12 of the M4 reflects the latest approach to the design and management of motorway service stations. The UK's first service stations were often dirty and poorly managed, but the focus at the more modern service stations is on high service and product quality. At the new Granada facility, for example, travellers can take advantage of a free massage and learn stress-relieving techniques.
