The art of the chair man

Article Abstract:

Sculpturally designed chairs from Danny Lane, Ron Arad and Tom Dixon are attracting growing interest from collectors in the UK. Lane has distanced himself from mass production, and he only permits two or three Etruscan chairs to leave his workshop in London, England, each year. Both Dixon and Arad have now turned to mass production, and this means that their early one-off and limited edition pieces will gain scarcity value. Prices sometimes do not reflect the future value of these pieces.

Tycoon tales in a tiny cottage industry

Article Abstract:

UK businessman John Hine has a turnover of 20 million Pounds sterling since he commenced his minature cottage industry in 1981. Hine's David Winter minature cottages are collector's items. Minatures which originally sold for over 4 Pounds sterling now fetch $3,200 as limited editions. Hine was forced to expand through US demand which has resulted in non-profitability. His bank loan is 5 million Pounds sterling. Hine blames the second hand market and collectors for distorting prices.

Images the art world forgot

Article Abstract:

Investing in icons can bring many uncertainties. The market remains narrow and unpredictable, with insufficient numbers of buyers and sellers to create a reliable history of price trends. However, it is widely accepted that icon prices will eventually rise. Icons remain much less expensive than Italian Old Masters, and it is possible to purchase decorative 18th century Greek provincial icon fragments for only 70 pounds sterling.
