Behind the ironic mask

Article Abstract:

The actors involved in Sir Peter Hall's new production of Sophocles' 'The Oedipus Plays' have found it extremely difficult to adapt to their roles, especially as they are masked. The production is very demanding, and many of the actors have found that they have experienced strong psychological changes through being masked. Some have found it hard to talk while masked, while others have become aggressive. Hall welcomes the actors' experiences, and emphasises how compulsive and rich the plays are.

Chums on seats

Article Abstract:

Audiences at premieres consist of people connected with the production invited by the producer, director, orchestra and chorus, investors and critics. A few seats are left to be sold, but the majority of the audience are famous people, making the cast nervous. This means the audience is unrepresentative so reactions cannot be taken as normal. The American system permits a few previews but no reviews until the day after the opening night.

Don't hold your breath

Article Abstract:

Patsy Rodenburg, Head of Voice at the National Theatre and the Guildhall School of Music, says natural speaking ability is affected by tension and posture. Simple stretch exercises release breath which is the key to the voice. Feelings are released, freeing the spirit. Language is physical and the voice should sound appropriate to the feeling.
