The ski resort of La Thuile, Italy, offers spectacular views from its many chair-lifts. The resort is dominated by Mont Blanc, and it is also possible to see the peak of the Matterhorn. It is never necessary to queue very long for the gondola, the main way for most skiers to get up to the piste and make contact with the ski schools. Those wishing to learn to ski or those lacking confidence in their skiing abilities will find that instructors are keen to move them on quickly, never allowing them to spend long on nursery slopes.

Japan has acknowledged that it uses its very large budget for overseas development aid to gain support from members of the International Whaling Commission. It hopes that financial incentives will encourage small countries to back its campaign to legalize whaling.
