O Superwoman

Article Abstract:

Media coverage of Nicola Horlick, who has been suspended from her position as head of pension fund management at Morgan Grenfell Asset Management following claims that she tried to persuade staff to leave with her for employment elsewhere, has been unfair. She has been portrayed as a 'superwoman' who can combine an extremely well paid career with bringing up five children. The overall impression is that her very high salary allows her to avoid the stresses which are faced by women on a lower income. This is not entirely the case, as she must still be a mother to all her children.

Superwoman flies into the public eye

Article Abstract:

The case of Nicola Horlick, the fund manager who was dismissed recently from Morgan Grenfell, has attracted extensive media attention. Some observers regard her as a 'superwoman,' dealing with a large family and a demanding job, while others point out that she has the benefit of a very large salary. However she is regarded, she has had to bear the burden of representing her entire gender. She has to try to present herself as natural, even though everyone is aware that women have to make extremely difficult choices.

Danger: women at work

Article Abstract:

The rise in the number of women in the workforce has resulted in significant cultural shifts. There have been a considerable number of cases of women suffering institutionalized discrimination and harassment, and it is not uncommon for men to defend the behaviour of other men even when it is indefensible. However, it is probably unrealistic to believe that the workplace can ever become a totally sex-free zone. Indeed, it may not be desirable for this to be the case.
