On the edges of madness

Article Abstract:

Artist, illustrator, poet, novelist and playwright Mervyn Peake showed exceptional creative ability, pushing his imagination to the outer limits of consciousness. He had a fertile imagination from a very early age, fed by his childhood experiences in China. There were also indications from childhood of a neurological disorder, and this may have been responsible for the latter collapse of his mental health. As a war artist, he was sent to Belsen shortly after its liberation in 1945, and this seemed to finally destroy his mental health.

The life and loves of Duncan Grant

Article Abstract:

Artist Duncan Grant had a fresh, original approach to life and art which gained him many admirers. He had a very vivid imagination, and this meant that he could picture himself in different periods in time. His first works, painted in the Edwardian period, were low-toned portraits which show great subtlety and skill. His style changed dramatically after French post-Impressionist work was exhibited in London, England, in 1910 and 1912. He returned to more traditional subject matter and styles in the 1920s.

Leighton's secret life

Article Abstract:

Victorian painter Frederic Leighton has generally been regarded as being a reserved and celibate man, even though there is a clearly sensual element to his works. However, recent research has revealed that he had an intimate relationship with one of his models which led to the birth of a son. Leighton made regular payments to his son, and after Leighton's death in 1986 these payments were continued by his sisters.
