Once upon a time, it was the undisputed king of the high street

Article Abstract:

Retail chain Marks & Spencer has traditionally had a very positive reputation among ordinary Britons, being regarded as offering high quality goods and as treating its employees well. However, it has recently suffered a fall in profits and has been negatively affected by conflict within its boardroom. Furthermore, sales in the vital Nov and Dec 1998 trading period were substantially lower than anticipated. New Chief Executive Peter Salsbury is now trying to revive the company's fortunes with an extensive reorganization programme.

Co-op to press for hefty damages

Article Abstract:

It has been revealed that Andrew Regan, head of Lancia Trust, obtained confidential information about the Co-operative Wholesale Society (CWS) from Allan Green, the former retailing controller of the company. This information was used by Regan to prepare a 1.5 billion pounds sterling break-up bid for CWS. He has now returned the information to the High Court, and CWS intends to claim damages from him. The company has been highly critical of Regan's tactics and ethics.
