One in 10 children try drugs by the age of 12

One in 10 children in Scotland have tried illegal drugs by the age of 12, according to research undertaken by the Centre for Drug Misuse Research at Glasgow University, Scotland. In most cases, children obtain drugs from their parents, siblings and family friends. A similar trend is taking place in England, where figures for 1997 indicate that 3% of boys and 2% of girls aged 11 to 12 have tried drugs. Drug-taking by children in their early teens or even younger is part of ordinary life for many families, according to the researchers at Glasgow University.

Ben Nevis rescuers and climbers left poles apart

Article Abstract:

The Lochaber mountain rescue team, which works on Ben Nevis, the UK's highest mountain, erected two 3m-high aluminium poles on the top of the mountain to aid navigation in autumn 1995. These were cut down in Nov 1996 by climbers who claim that the poles are intrusive, and climbers are threatening to cut down any replacement poles, whatever they are made of. Climbers place great emphasis on the freedom to take risks, and many therefore reject safety aids.

Shepherds watch their flocks by night as rustlers lie in wait

Article Abstract:

Sheep rustling has become a severe problem across the fells of northern England and the Scottish Borders. This has prompted the creation of nightly 'Sheep Watch' patrols on the North York moors, from where more than 3,000 sheep were stolen in 1995. So far in 1996, only 208 sheep have been stolen. This has led to a corresponding increase in rustling in the Yorkshire Dales and the Borders.
