Is politics a career for your daughter?

Article Abstract:

Clare Short, UK Labour Member of Parliament, who was demoted as a member of the shadow cabinet because of her outspokenness, would not want a daughter of hers to become involved in politics, if she had one, as she finds it a disagreeable world. Jack Cunningham, shadow National Heritage spokesman, is also opposed to daughters entering the political arena, which he finds hard and unkind. Tessa Jowell, who has been a strong supporter of women in parliament, would encourage her 15-year-old daughter to enter politics if she wanted to do so.

Now for a short break from free speech

Article Abstract:

There are a number of anomalies associated with the UK's regulations regarding advertising on television. The TV Code of Advertising Standards and Practice states that no advertisement showing partiality in relation to issues of industrial or political controversy or relating to current public policy will be allowed. The main problem lies with the definition of political. Another difficulty is that different regulations apply to different media. This means that freedom of speech is currently enforced in a very haphazard way.

Unrepentant Norris romps and tells

Article Abstract:

The forthcoming publication of the memoirs of former Conservative transport minister Steven Norris is likely to cause considerable embarrassment to the UK Conservative party. He has shown disloyalty, especially in criticising deputy prime minister Michael Heseltine, and has also revealed details of relationships with five women. He flourished during the Thatcher era, but has not been successful in the more restrained political climate of the 1990s.
