One man and his God: Glenn Hoddle, the man who believed too much

Article Abstract:

Glenn Hoddle, coach of the England football team, has been attracting controversy for some time with his unconventional views and his refusal to fit the mould of a typical football coach. Most recently, he has been widely criticized for expressing apparently insensitive views about handicapped people. Hoddle has undertaken good work for the handicapped in the past, but has now undone this work by using words which, however unintentional they were, have allowed others to ridicule the handicapped. Any remaining traces of sympathy for Hoddle were eliminated by his claims that he was misquoted by the journalist to whom he made his remarks about handicapped people.

The model of restraint

Article Abstract:

Footballer David Beckham can be regarded as the personification of the new affluence which has allowed football to free itself from its origins. He had problems controlling his temper early in his career, but has now developed a strong ability to focus his talent and a clear commitment to the team ethnic. He has been widely criticized for an incident which led to him being sent off during a World Cup 1998 match, widely seen as causing irreparable damage to the England team's chances of victory, but has shown great restraint in ignoring this criticism.

Hoddle may have to pay the price for his verbal sin

Article Abstract:

England football team coach Glenn Hoddle has attracted considerable controversy with his allegation that disabled people are being punished for sins in previous lives. A number of people have called for his dismissal. The Football Association initially supported Hoddle, but there are now indications that it is seeking to distance itself from him. Hoddle claims that his remarks were misinterpreted. There are particular concerns about the extent to which he is influenced by faith healer Eileen Drewery.
