One-man flying squad lands Met's top job

Article Abstract:

John Stevens has been appointed head of the Metropolitan Police in London, England. The force has been affected by a corruption inquiry, and by criticism following an inquiry into the investigation of the murder of Stephen Lawrence. Crime rates have also risen in London, England. Stevens began working with the Met in 1964, and has also worked with other police forces. He sees major changes coming for the Met, especially with the setting up of a new police authority.

He cruised resorts in search of new victims

Article Abstract:

It is believed that disc jockey Richard Baker raped and assaulted a considerable number of women in the south of England and in Spain. He was first convicted of rape in 1986, and was jailed for six years for that offence in 1987. He has now been convicted again after 12 women came forward to press charges against him. He was captured after an extensive police operation involving a number of different police forces, both in the UK and Spain.

Glitter 'sexually assaulted' fan aged 14 for years

Article Abstract:

The jury at the Crown Court in Bristol, England, has heard allegations that pop star Gary Glitter repeatedly sexually abused a 14-year-old girl after meeting her at one of his concerts in 1980. Glitter faces four charges of indecently assaulting an under-age girl, along with four charges of serious sexual assault. It is claimed that he threatened to commit suicide if the girl ended their relationship.
