Out of the ashes of war

Article Abstract:

Music played a key role in the rebuilding of Cologne, Germany, after the second world war. A symphony orchestra was created by the local radio station, and this helped meet the city's cultural needs at a time when its infrastructure was in ruins. However, orchestral life in Cologne is now under threat, with key musical figures in the city expressing very mixed views about the future of life-contracts for musicians. It is likely that musicians will have to accept shorter contracts and that some orchestras will close down.

A dream between the twin towers

Article Abstract:

Western music has traditionally been regarded as decadent in Malaysia, but this situation is now beginning to change. State-owned oil company Petronas has set up a resident symphony orchestra in its new concert hall, and University Putra Malaysia now has a music department, where there is a form of conservatory. Petronas Chmn Tan Sri Azizan aims to set up a full-scale conservatory in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, from which the symphony orchestra will eventually be staffed.

Magicians who can make urban gloom disappear

Article Abstract:

Architectural design firms such as Freeform Artworks are playing a growing role in brightening up run-down inner city areas. They are producing boldly painted hoardings for building sites, using reclaimed materials to make interesting sculptures and working with local residents to create murals. Such companies serve both to create work for artists and to form a link between art and architecture.
