Patients before they are born

Article Abstract:

Prenatal diagnosis has made it possible to diagnose and treat some abnormalities in unborn babies. Diagnosis is made by ultrasound scanning, and in some cases abnormalities need only be monitored before birth and treated afterwards. Others require treatment in the uterus, while some defects are so severe that termination is advised. Treatment before birth can include drugs, blood transfusions, shunts and heart valve manipulation. Such work is done at Guys Hospital and Kings College Hospital, London.

Born to be wild

Article Abstract:

The Omo valley in Ethiopia is extremely remote, and remains virtually untouched by the modern world. It has beautiful landscapes and a wide range of wild animals, but is made almost uninhabitable by the tsetse fly. It is home to a number of different tribes which often clash with each other. Some tribes are now in danger of dying out completely. These include the Karo people, who now number fewer than 1,000.

Born of blossom and snow

Article Abstract:

The famous Japanese drumming group Kodo lives communally in Ogi, Sado, an island off the north coast of Japan. It was established by musicologist Tagayasu Den in 1970, who was obsessed with fitness. The apprentice school is very strict: trainees, aged 18-25, get up at 5.30am and run six miles before breakfast. They practise drumming, based on ancient Shinto rituals, for eight hours every day.
