Pentagon hints at blitz on Saddam's military elite

Article Abstract:

The US is consulting its allies across the world as it prepares to take military action against Iraq, which is defying United Nations resolutions by continuing to construct weapons of mass destruction. The Pentagon may also act against Saddam Hussein by targeting elite Iraqi military formations as part of a high-pressure bombing campaign. The UK would cooperate with the US in undertaking an intense air bombardment. The US government appears to regard a bombing campaign more as a way of punishing Saddam Hussein than as part of political efforts to remove him from power.

The West's fantasy firepower

Article Abstract:

The recent US missile attack on Iraq following the capture of troops loyal to Iraqi president Saddam Hussein of Arbil, the Kurdish capital, will have no long-term impact on Iraq. This is also the case with the extension of the no-fly zone in southern Iraq. Saddam Hussein has made a tactical gain, but may later regret this, as the costs will be high, especially if the Patriotic Union of Kurdistan retaliates. The US has learned that high-tech firepower is useless if there is no real political will to use it.

Iraq bars three Americans from UN inspection team

Article Abstract:

There are mixed views about whether the decision by Iraq to order American members of the United Nations' (UN) arms-inspection team to leave the country brings Iraq into conflict solely with the US or with the UN as a whole. The US and the UK have interpreted Iraq's stance as confronting the UN as a whole, and have not ruled out military action. France, Russia and China believe that the UK and the US are being too hardline against Iraq.
