Performance gets a rave review

Article Abstract:

The principles of individual performance review are increasingly used in all public service areas. Many National Health Service Trusts are creating performance-related methods of evaluation which eliminate usage of national salary scales. Every employee will have individual performance targets. Local authorities such as Kent and Buckinghamshire use formal performance appraisals for salary increases and no longer use national grades. The government encourages decentralised, flexible and locally responsive management style.

More pay - now for higher status

Article Abstract:

Engineers are increasingly willing to recommend the profession as a career to young people. Their salaries are good, more engineers have company cars, most have professional development opportunities and can choose to retire at 60. Fewer students choose engineering or technology courses and employers find it difficult to recruit sufficient employees. There is a shortage of high technical grade employees with practical training. The improvement in job satisfaction may attract more recruits to the profession.

Fit to face a trip off the beaten track

Article Abstract:

County councils and district councils hope to attract cycling tourists as they spend longer in an area than motorists and do not damage the environment. Many have AB social status, with plenty of money to spend. South Somerset District Council created a 100-mile route which links with other networks in Dorset, Avon and Wiltshire. Nottinghamshire has lists of rides of between 26 and 49 miles. Other areas are planning cycling routes. Holidaymakers appreciate the healthy image of cycling.
