Philosopher of la dolce vita

Article Abstract:

Italian publishers Stampa Alternativa sold over 1,300,000 copies of the ancient Greek philosopher Epicurus's 'La Lettera sulla felicitia' or'Letter on Happiness' in the year 1992/3. They produce the Millelire series which sell for 1,000 lire (50 pence) compared to a regular paperback which costs about 8 pounds sterling. Many theories about the reason for Epicurus's popularity have been broached. Some believe he condemns materialism; some think he recommends 'enlightened consumerism' and enfranchisement.

I'm sorry, I haven't a clue

Article Abstract:

Many famous people who have been greatly respected for their intellect have in fact had little knowledge of wider developments in their art. They are often prepared to acknowledge that certain artists are important to others, but have to confess that these artists have had little or no personal significance for them. This should reassure people who find it hard to follow latest trends in artistic taste.

Driven to the edge of the page

Article Abstract:

Many readers hold imaginary conversations with books and scribble jottings in the margins. Authors and poets themselves add notes which are later included in scholarly texts. Some remarks are addressed to future readers, some to the author. Editorial remarks are sometimes printed. Marginalia are reactive and sometimes impolite. They often refer to other works and make corrections.
