Pile 'em deep, sell 'em cheap

Article Abstract:

It is now possible to purchase a reasonable multimedia PC for less than 1,000 pounds sterling in the UK. This reflects the fact that PCs continue to become more powerful and less expensive. This is creating difficulties for manufacturers, which are set to see falling revenues. Increasingly, only those manufacturers able to produce and sell PCs in very large quantities will survive. Some observers believe that offering basic PCs at low prices will not benefit the computer industry or users in the long term, especially as software becomes more demanding.

The CEO without an ego

Article Abstract:

Intel CEO Craig Barrett regards himself as an engineer who taught engineering, rather than as a professional businessman. He welcomes competition, and enjoys the pragmatic aspects of the computer business. He feels that Intel is still an engineering company, but that it has made some progress towards becoming a marketing company. He believes that there is considerable potential for the expansion of electronic commerce, which will become more attractive through faster Internet connections and better graphics.
