Pile 'em high, send 'em up north

Article Abstract:

The Tate Gallery in Liverpool, England, seems to have no specific purpose. The city has not played a significant role in modern art history, and it seems that its Tate Gallery is merely used to take modern art that cannot be shown in London, England, because of lack of space. In terms of its exhibitions, the gallery has never seemed to be an independent museum. However, it has performed well with special exhibitions, such as the large solo shows given to Rachel Whiteread, Antony Gormley and others.

Cool, calm, disconnected

Article Abstract:

The Hayward Gallery in London, England, is staging a Patrick Caulfield retrospective. Hanging a lot of works by Caulfield together seems to cause them to lose their impact, as his work is really designed to hang singly. His works also have more impact in a private setting than in a public one. His style tends to stress and insulate things, with each item being treated equally, bringing rather odd results. The charm of his 1960s style lies in its perfect insensitivity.

Too close for comfort

Article Abstract:

The Hayward Gallery in London, England, is currently staging an exhibition of portraits painted over a period of more than 30 years by artist Chuck Close. The portraits are vast in scale, but minutely executed. The nearer the viewer gets, the more remote the subjects seem to become. However, Close remains faithful to the restricted level of detail contained in the original photographs from which he works.
