Pitting wits against coal closures

Article Abstract:

British Coal Enterprise (BCE) is the subsidiary of British Coal responsible for finding work for redundant miners. It has 250 outplacement counsellors. It provides loans to help create jobs, but less firms are interested in new projects in the recession. BCE found work for 26,000 between 1987 and 1992, an 86% success rate. It has job shops in the collieries linked to a central computer. Miners are given a pack with exercises to improve job-seeking skills.

Some estate agents believe that using the Internet will change the nature of their business, while others point out that Internet usage is still in its very early stages.

Backbone close to breaking point

Article Abstract:

Sterling Tubes of Walsall, England is a middle-sized manufacturing company which is surviving the recession although with many cutbacks. No capital projects go ahead unless they can pay for themselves within a year. Further cutbacks would limit their ability to hold on. Training and meetings with the workers keep up morale. The pound's withdrawal from the ERM aided its business in the US.
