Waiting for Waitrose to come to town

Article Abstract:

Monmouth Council lost Chippenham Flood Meadows when they turned them into a public works depot and car park in 1972. They are now voting on a proposal for a Waitrose Supermarket and car park on this site. To meet the necessary weekly turnover of 250,000 pounds sterling, Waitrose will need to attract 16,600 customers a week. The population of Monmouth is 7,000, whereas the planned Waitrose is based on a catchment area of 25,000. This would mean traffic from a 20-mile radius, for a small market town with little parking space. Existing shops would suffer from the competition. The architectural style planned is pseudo-vernacular and does not relate to supermarket function. The size, 16,000 sq ft, equates to the total grocery shop area in Monmouth and would probably mean the loss of many local shops.

Built for the people - so tell the people

Article Abstract:

Some major cities across the world have a proper architecture centre, where ordinary people can view new projects and receive full information about them. This is not the case in London, UK, where the lack of public involvement in major schemes has sometimes caused false impressions to be gained. Glasgow and Edinburgh are both establishing architecture centres, reflecting their efforts to become world-class cities. Such an approach should also be taken in London, where there is a need for improved communications between architects and ordinary people.
