Plain talk just isn't enough

Article Abstract:

Language schools teaching English to foreigners have experienced a drop in students in 1991 and 1992 and more rigorous grammar and specialised needs such as business English, English for banking and English for academic study are being demanded. More general students sit external examinations. Good English language teaching is available in EC countries. RSA qualified teachers have increased to 6,000 and unqualified staff are rarely employed. Oriental students are increasing and Eastern Europe is a potential market. Language schools in America and Australasia provide increasing competition.

How the cowboys made the most of the stampede to learn English

Article Abstract:

There are now believed to be around 30 companies in the UK offering training courses for people interested in teaching English as a foreign language (TEFL). Standards vary greatly, and the training at some of these companies is of dubious quality. However, there are now indications that the industry is taking steps to deal with this problem. It is particularly recommending the Cambridge RSA Certificate in TEFL and the Certificate TESOL, monitored by Trinity College, London.
