Playing it like it is

Article Abstract:

Roger Norrington gets modern musicians to play old instruments to create an experience of continuity. His period instrumentalists are known as the London Classical Players. He progressed through Schutz, Handel, Bach, Haydn to Brahms, his latest subject. The later the repertoire, the more visible is his involvement as conductor. Tempo change is needed in music after 1800. Brahms did not supply metronome markings as he felt there was no set way to interpret his music.

Middle-age cred

Article Abstract:

Opera singer Brigitte Fassbaender turned to directing after reaching middle age when parts are scarce for mezzo sopranos. After 1982 she concentrated more on concert work but, finding this unfulfilling, she moved into directing. Her directing debut was in Munich in 1989. Her British debut will be in January 1992 with Leeds' Opera North performing 'Der ferne Klang.' The three-act opera is about an obsessed composer who abandons his girlfriend to prostitution.
