Poaching on the increase as fight for funds begins

Article Abstract:

UK universities are already beginning to compete for top academics in preparation for the next research assessment exercise, which will take place in 2001. Many universities are determined to ensure that their ratings will be as high as possible, as this will affect how much funding they receive. Some observers fear that a vicious circle will emerge, with universities receiving higher levels of funding being able to spend more on research facilities, and thus finding it easier to attract leading researchers.

How to study without losing your pay cheque

Article Abstract:

It has become increasingly common for UK universities to offer more flexible degree courses, especially at postgraduate level. This allows students to work on a part-time or modular basis, thus ensuring that they can also have paid employment. Some universities are offering distance learning courses, which allow people to study without taking time off work, while others are also involved in work-based learning, focusing on skills with direct relevance to the working environment.

Counting the cost of qualification

Article Abstract:

UK universities are becoming increasingly concerned that applications for postgraduate study places will decline as the financial burden on undergraduate students rises. The National Postgraduate Committee believes that universities will have to consider addressing this problem by offering financial incentives for students considering undertaking postgraduate study. Another approach may be to extend the student loan scheme to postgraduates.
