Pole position: how Nicola Foulston moved up the grid in the race for Formula One

Article Abstract:

Nicola Foulston, head of the Brands Hatch motor racing circuit, has gained the right to stage the British Grand Prix, which since 1987 has been held at the Silverstone circuit in Northamptonshire, England. British Racing Drivers Club, which owns Silverstone, is aware that it has now been placed in a vulnerable position, and is planning a restructuring that will issue shares to members and form a 'golden share' to protect against a hostile takeover for up to three years. Some observers believe that Brands Hatch will not be capable of holding a Grand Prix and will therefore have to make a new bid for Silverstone.

In Pole position

Article Abstract:

Negotiations are set to begin on the accession of some eastern European countries to the European Union six months after the end of the European Unions intergovernmental conference in summer 1997. However, considerable work will have to be undertaken if Poland, the Czech Republic and Hungary are to be in a position to become European Union members before the end of the 1990s. Poland is also keen to join the North Atlantic Treaty Organisation, especially in the light of the unpredictability of developments in Russia.
