The shopping basket, the soil and the public purse

Article Abstract:

The European Union's Common Agricultural Policy (CAP) gives a legal guarantee for farmers that their produce will be purchased at a minimum price, with high tariffs being imposed on produce imported from elsewhere. There are now plans to undertake extensive reform of the CAP, abolishing open-ended intervention and phasing out price supports. This should lead to lower consumer prices for agricultural produce. However, there is likely to be strong opposition from farmers, many of whom will be backed by their governments.

Europe to end farms madness

Article Abstract:

There will be extensive changes to European agricultural policy as part of Agenda 2000, measures designed to prepare the European Union for expansion into eastern Europe. The Common Agricultural Policy's system of artificially high prices and subsidies to support farmers will be replaced with direct income support to farmers. Guaranteed prices for farmers will be cut by up to 30% for main crops and commodities in the first stage of the scheme. In the long term, agriculture could return to the free market.
