If the goods are no good, blame the plastic ...

Article Abstract:

It is common in the UK for credit card companies to try to claim that they are not liable for fault goods or poor services purchased by credit card, according to a report from the National Consumer Council. Under section 75 (s75) of the Consumer Credit Act 1974, a person using a personal credit card to purchase goods or services which are not provided or are not as described can seek redress from the supplier, or the credit card company, or both. However, credit card companies frequently tell the consumer to tackle the supplier first.

How to find a good deal

Article Abstract:

Buying at auction is not necessarily the best way to obtain a good deal on antique items. Indeed, prices at auction can now sometimes be higher than in antique shops. An item which was originally purchased very cheaply, perhaps as part of a house clearance, can be sold on several times before it reaches its final purchaser, and the price is often greatly inflated. Car boot sales can offer good deals on 'modern' antiques, and it is also worth visiting street markets.

How to read between the lines of annual reports

Article Abstract:

It is worth taking the trouble to study the annual report and accounts of companies in which you invest. If you do not feel able to read all the information in detail, then it is worth at least looking at the chairman's and chief executive's statements, which will give an indication of the company's future prospects. Attention should also be given to the balance sheet, the profit and loss account and the cash flow statement.
