Unite and rule: the brave new ombudsman's world

Article Abstract:

The UK Financial Services Authority plans to establish a single Financial Services Ombudsman to replace the current eight different ombudsman schemes covering the financial sector. The new scheme will be run by a limited company, and once this company has been created, the Ombudsman Scheme's board will appointed. The main role of this board will be determining the structure of the new scheme. Some observers have been critical of this development, claiming that the new ombudsman will be too large.

Carat and stick approach to diamond investment

Article Abstract:

Investing in diamonds can be complicated, as the market is controlled by the Central Selling Organisation (CSO), managed by De Beers. The CSO aims to align supply and demand, thus avoiding large fluctuations in the market price. It is best to go to a jeweller for the purchase of a single diamond, but it is also possible to purchase unmounted brilliant-cut diamonds at auction. It is worth purchasing second-hand, as this gives better value for money than new diamonds.

Your first fortune

Article Abstract:

There is growing interest from collectors in first editions by famous 20th century authors. However, it is important to be aware that some authors have gone out of fashion. Poets are generally less attractive to collectors than novelists. The most popular novelists at present include Agatha Christie, Graham Greene and Evelyn Waugh. Generally, first editions must be in extremely good condition to be attractive to collectors, unless the book is extremely rare.
