President stumbles as courage fails to hide the pressure

Article Abstract:

The fact that President Bill Clinton is currently under extreme pressure because of allegations about his private life was clearly reflected in his delivery of the 1998 State of the Union address. He seemed to lack the aura of power that typically surrounds him, and he appeared to stumble twice over his words. He emphasized that the US economy is currently very strong, and presented a series of new spending programmes. However, media attention has focused on his private life, and his presidency remains weak.

France's brand new national library: a fitting tribute to a president or folie des grandeurs?

Article Abstract:

Very mixed views have been expressed about the new national library of France, which is set to be opened shortly by president Jacques Chirac. Some observers believe that the building, situated on what was formerly urban wasteland by the Seine in Paris, France, is already outdated, while others see it as part of a more general process of modernisation in the city. The project has attracted great controversy, and trade unions are still expressing concerns about inadequate safety facilities and staffing.

A failure of leadership that could haunt the President

Article Abstract:

There appeared to be an administrative vacuum within the US administration in the immediate aftermath of the terrorist attacks on the World Trade Centre and the Pentagon. Some disasters cannot be fully prepared for, but it is vital for governments to be seen to be visible and united.
