Press the button for instant relief

Article Abstract:

Patient controlled analgesia (PCA) is beneficial to the patient and saves the NHS money. The PCA unit is beside the bed with a syringe of pain-relieving drug attached to a vein in the patient's hand. The other hand holds a cable with a button on the end. When the button is pressed the unit bleeps. It signals when the syringe needs refilling by the nurse. PCAs are set to the required dose and will not operate more often than every five minutes. They provide a constant level of pain relief.
