Private and public funds to save species

Article Abstract:

The new UK government has promised to give environmental protection a high priority, and for this reason is likely to accept the recommendations contained in a report entitled 'Biodiversity: The UK Steering Group Report.' This document is based around action plans for 116 very important species and 14 types of habitat which will ensure that each species and habitat is protected. The government's share of implementing this programme would cost only around 1 pound sterling per adult Briton a year, but it seems unlikely that the government will make any new money available to meet this cost.

Giving wildlife a chance

Article Abstract:

There has been severe damage to wildlife in the UK over recent decades as a result of factors such as intensive farming and urban development. It is important to care about threats to animals and habitats abroad, but Britons should focus their attention on ensuring that conservation works effectively in the UK itself. It is important for the UK to set an example in the area of conservation, guiding developing countries so that they do not encounter the problems which the UK is already having to face.

To save the world, start here

Article Abstract:

Considerable attention is given in the UK to protecting endangered species in countries such as India, Kenya and Brazil. However, it is really only possible to have a limited influence from a distance, and it would be better to concentrate efforts on protecting the UK's own flora and fauna, much of which is also in danger of extinction. It is vital that effective conservation efforts are now established, and the UK should become an example to other countries.
